The Importance Of High Flash Point In Lubricants

The Importance Of High Flash Point In Lubricants featured image

Having a High Flash Point is an important characteristic in a lubricant, especially in environments where spills, leaks or ruptured lines could encounter an ignition source. If your equipment operates at very high temperature and/or there is the potential exposure to high temperature situations while in use, storage and transport, flash point should be high on the list of important attributes to consider.

What is Flash Point?

Flash point is the lowest temperature at which the vapor above an oil will ignite or flash momentarily if/when an ignition source is passed over or exposed to it. Having a high flash point indicates you have a lower fire hazard when exposed to high temperature heat sources.

When operating equipment at high temperatures a high flash point is important first and foremost for operator safety. Beyond the human cost of injury that could result from lubricant ignition, there are business costs including damage to equipment and facilities and subsequent effects of fires and/or explosions on your safety rating (affecting your insurance costs). If there are fire issues with your lubricants the downtime this creates is also an important cost that needs to be considered. So it is vital to your business to make sure the lubricants you are using can manage the temperatures within your operations.

BioBlend Delivers

BioBlend’s natural ester (plant) based lubricants have a naturally higher flash point than you typically find in petroleum-based products. Any time you are considering making a switch from one product to another or one brand to another it is important to take into consideration the typical properties of those lubricants and how they might affect the efficiency and safety of your work environment.
